The psathi / alang alang is also a perennial plant, but with leafy shoots and a height that can reach up to 2.50 meters. It is used for an umbrella or roof cover. It grows in marshes and on the shores of lakes, rivers and canals all over the country. Like the reed, the psathi that we use in Omprela for our constructions is collected from the wider area of Lake Kerkini and from the many canals and ditches created by the guarantee works of the River Strymonas river basin. Thus, its collection is a key source of income for the local economy – especially in its lower income strata – thus supporting both our local and our national economy.
After its collection, which takes place during the summer months (June to August), the psathi is dried in the sun. Special care is needed in this phase so as not to completely eliminate its moisture, in order to maintain the necessary flexibility and to be used then in knitting the umbrella and other constructions in general (mats, wicker chairs, hats and other wicker constructions).
